The gold and jewellery industry in Penang has a history spanning over a century. In recognition of its cultural value, UNESCO designated the Gold Bazaar in Georgetown as part of the intangible heritage of the Georgetown World Heritage Site in 2008, aiming to revive and preserve the trade.

Despite its significance, the industry struggles to sustain itself. Penang, Malaysia’s largest
contributor to the sector, lacks formal
apprenticeship or training programs. With no jewellery training centers in the state, the absence of structured education for the younger generation threatens the industry’s future.

To address this, a proposed program will focus on training, research, and public engagement through an interactive exhibition space that highlights the rich heritage of gold and jewellery in Penang.
